I want to go on record as saying that it should only be September 4th instead of September 20th as I write this. It shouldn’t be October by the time you read it. And I’m not alone, everyone I talk to says the same thing, “I just don’t know where the month went.” If you ask me, I think there should be a bipartisan congressional super-committee to look in to the current time crisis, because it seems like none of us have enough.
In all seriousness, the pace of life has accelerated to the point that we regularly can not complete everything we would like and have to make choice about what we will skip and what we will do. We often make those kind of decision on the spur of the moment without thinking beyond the immediate. What that means is that often what we claim is important and that we value is incongruent with what we choose to do. It is rare indeed that I talk with someone who says God is not important to them, yet when asked the last time they went to worship, participated in a Bible study, or took 30 minutes to pray, the response is “I want to, but I just don’t have enough time.” And I know what they mean. I don’t always spend as much time in those activities as I would like.
It’s true none of us have enough time. Yet sometimes it is not about finding the time as much as it is making the time. We need to make time to do that which we claim to value because if we don’t, we will forget that we value it in the first place. When our actions and words become incongruent, we tend to forget what is important in our lives. It is in this sense that I write to you this month asking you to make time for something important.
Over the past year we have been testing a new program at Peace called Covenant Discipleship Groups. These are small groups that meet periodically to encourage each other in faithful living. They are not Bible study or fellowship groups, but discipleship groups. In short they are about remembering our values, looking at how we live them and challenging one another to be true to them. On October 16th we will be having an information meeting after church about opening this program to everyone in the congregation. I encourage you to prayerfully consider staying after church that Sunday to learn more about this program. I realize your time is valuable and precious, and I encourage you to make the time for this.
If you would like to read more about the Covenant Discipleship Program before the meeting, you can find information on our website, look for “Discipleship Groups” under “Groups” menu item.
